It’s one thing to decide to do “a scene a day” and quite another to actually come up with a totally new one the very next day. Last night I went to bed with one question—What episode should I whip up next?—and today I woke up with the same question. And I thought of it and thought of it…until I read some articles in a few issues of Writer’s Digest again.
Steven James in “Go Organic” says, “If you find yourself at a loss for what to write next, come up with a way to make things worse, let the characters respond naturally to what’s happening…” (WD, Mar. 2013)
Well, I couldn’t come up with anything that would make things worse (partly, because it’s Saturday and I’m not in the mood to think about bad things), so I decided to write a love scene that I’d planned for some time and couldn’t get to it. I deliberated whether to choose Kate to narrate it or Nick. As a woman, it’d be easier for me to write from a female point of view, but…it’d be so much more fascinating to get into a guy’s head and read his mind. Plus, I love challenges.
So Nick narrated today’s scene. I loved Nick in my previous novel A Measure of Guilt and, naturally, I love him in this sequel. He makes me laugh. So it was so much fun to type what he was saying on the computer screen. And man, did I have to type it fast! 🙂
